Wayne Rooney believes Ivan Toney ruined his England future by joining Saudi Arabia last summer. The

28-year-old has been absent from Lee Carsley’s last two squads since moving from Brentford to Al Ahly in a deal worth £40million.

Rooney has admitted he is concerned about who will replace Harry Kane as England’s number one striker when the Bayern Munich striker retires from international duty.

I don’t think there’s an outstanding player. And that’s what we’re talking about with young players. For young players who might be in the Under-18s or Under-21s, they’re looking and thinking about the next two to four years. We’ve seen that happen with Cobbie Menu when he came through the door.

“You might look and think, ‘I could be the next No. 9 for England’. That should give you the motivation and the drive to go and push for that.”
